Starters

Change vehicle

The starter in your car is a key engine component that gets your vehicle moving. They are referred to as self-starters, starter motors, and cranking motors, but essentially, they have one primary job. Start your engine when you turn the key or press the start button.

Is my car starter bad? How do I Know?

A car starter is the simple mechanism that begins when you turn your ignition switch. This switch energizes the starter's interior electromagnet which pushes a rod into the pinion gear. This gear is pushed into the flywheel of your engine, and ultimately cranks over your engine.

Unfortunately, the interior parts of a starter become worn out over time. Typically lasting up to 100,000+ miles, starters more or less can fail prematurely, or end up going the distance before seeing trouble at 150,000 miles.

Signs of a bad car starter are usually easy to point out. Look for symptoms such as:

  • Slower start or trouble engine turning over
  • Clicking or whining noises when turning ignition
  • The interior lights dim in the car
  • The smell of burning electric components or smoke
  • Starer is covered in oil
