Fuel filters are essential for all gas-powered vehicles. There are usually two inside every car and their function is to keep your fuel free of contaminants. But what are fuel filters made of? When should you replace one?

The first fuel filter in most car fuel systems acts as a strainer for the fuel coming in. There are tiny byproducts of the fuel making process. These particles settle in the fuel and need to be captured before going through your fuel pump and engine. After the strainer filter, a secondary filter cleans the fuel once more.

Similar to oil filters, fuel filters are made of pleated paper fibers with a plastic housing top and bottom that helps tightly seal from leaks. Known as media, it is what allows fuel through but captures any particles.

Overtime, these dirt particles can accumulate in the filter and the fibers can wear thin. When this occurs, you may notice a rise in fuel usage and possibly a sputtering engine. If you feel surges when driving, it may be a fuel-related issue. Seek professional inspection of your fuel system and filters shall this happen.
